I went in to Dischem a few weeks ago to buy some toiletries when my ever wondering eye rested on the L.A. Girl Matte Flat Finish Pigment Gloss. Having only ever used their concealer, I was hesitant to splurge and decided on only three of their pigment gloss; Stunner, Bazaar and Instinct.
I love colour so I tend to gravitate towards brightly coloured lippies and even though Stunner and Instinct are colours I already own in Mac Heroine and Chilli, I still chose to buy the glosses.
The first colour I tried was Stunner and I loved it. The purple colour was a deeper shade than my Mac Heroine and in my head I thought “this is what Heroine should look like on my lips”. I also got complimented on the colour and had a few ladies wanting to know what colour it is and where I got it from. Sadly, the second time I tried it on, it didn’t glide on as smoothly as the first time even though I used the same technique of moisturising my lip with a matte balm – nipple cream- before applying the matte gloss. The gloss looked streaky and it appeared as if I had used highlighter on my lips instead of gloss so I decided to use Heroine as a base and also used it to line my lips before applying Stunner and again after. This seemed to achieve a better result but I noticed after two hours, my lips started to cake and I had flaky patches on my lips.
The second colour I tried was Instinct which is more of an orange colour and this was worse than Stunner. I needed to apply three coats (same with Bazaar) and had to make sure to spread it evenly with the wand otherwise you end up with colour on some parts of your lip and streaks on the other. When you smack your lips together, you notice a stickiness on your lips which if not done with extreme caution will leave you having to wipe off the entire gloss and re-apply.

Furthermore, when you do wipe off the gloss, it doesn’t wipe easily and comes off in dry patches. You can also get stains from the gloss on your hands and the tube if you’re not careful and it does not wipe off easily. I’ve had to wipe gloss off my hands and the tube a number of times but you’ll probably still see from the picture that there are stains on the tube still.
Overall, the Stunner for some reason is the best of the three colours I purchased and applies better than the other two. However, all three require some effort to make them look good/decent on your lips.
I might add that I don’t have experience with matte lipglosses, the only other matte gloss I have is by Yardley and I also didn’t really take to that so perhaps it’s a “matte lipgloss” thing. I do love all three colours but it’s not something I would advise anyone to put on when they are in a hurry because it takes some time to get it right and you wouldn’t want to leave the house looking like you just had something to eat and didn’t bother to re-apply your lipstick.
The LA Girl Matte Flat Finish Pigment Gloss is R59.95 at Dischem.
If you know of matte lipglosses that are amazing, please let me know.
Love and Kisses!
NB: I have only used L.A. Girl Matte Flat Finish Pigment Gloss in the lip swatch images shown here. No other product other than nipple cream, to moisturise my lips was used.
